NWT SPCA Needs Help!

This email just received. I am not sure if there is anyone out there with resources that can help. If you know someone with the means to remove these K9s let me know. I see where there have been flights in and out of the U.S.A. to Edmonton to the Humane Society to save K9s in California maybe there is someone out there with a cargo plane to donate for a day or two? Imagine how many of our little friends could be rescued with an aircraft that big. Email below:

My name is Sarah Hunt and I am the President of the Northwest Territories Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). I am contacting you all in the hopes that someone can help us out, as we are in an extremely desperate situation and need to turn to some of our fellow shelters and supporters to ask for your help.

The NWT SPCA operates on a fully volunteer-basis, do not have a consistent source of funding, and do not even own our own shelter. We do have a local shelter operated by the local veterinary clinic, however the shelter is filled to the brim with homeless animals already, and there is no room to fit any more animals. This creates many barriers and limitations for us as to what we can do for our homeless, neglected and abandoned pets. Our mission is to help animals around the entire Territory, but with our limited resources, and the desperate situation that exists in the north which includes many instances of neglect, abuse and irresponsible owners, we are realizing very quickly that we cannot do it on our own and need as much help from other like-minded and common interest organizations as you are willing to give.

We get cries and pleas for help from residents and leaders in our rural communities every, single day, and it kills us to tell them that we don't have the capacity to help them save the animals in their communities. Most recently (today actually), we received a call from the Band Manager in on of our rural communities Lutsel K'e. He indicated that there are 50-70 dogs running loose in the community, and that they may have no other choice than to shoot them if we can't help them soon. Most of these dogs are very friendly animals, and in some cases are even pets....but they are not being cared for properly, and are let loose to roam the streets 24/7. It is phone calls like this that we dread, but that are all too common. We have also over this past week been recieiving many phone calls from concerned residents in another community Behchoko, indicating that there are numerous young puppies who have been either abandoned and cast out of homes, or who have never had homes to begin with. They are left outside to fend for themselves in the freezing temperatures (of which we are seeing more recently dipping down to the -20's, and will continue to drop to -30's and -40's over the next few months). These puppies will not survive long, are helpless, and are desperate for shelter, warmth, and food. We wish that we could rescue every single one of them, but the reality is that we just don't have the capacity, resources, or even shelter to do so, and neither do the communities.

Some of these northern communities have even introduced laws that allows them to shoot any stray dog that they see! Although we are making efforts to address these much bigger issues by lobbying government, we need some immediate solutions in the interim to save some of these helpless animals. None of these animals deserve to suffer as they do, and we want to help them....we need to help them. The Edmonton Humane Society has graciously indicated that we could send some younger puppies down to them, and we are ever grateful for their support. However, we still have hundreds of dogs that need rescuing; the majority of which will surely be shot over the coming weeks if we do not get them out. It is a sad reality here, but we cannot give up trying to save as many as we can.

I am hoping that by sending this plea for help out to our neighboring province's shelters and rescue organizations, we may be able to develp some strong, long-lasting relationships and support networks, save our beautiful companions, and allow them a second chance to have the lives that they deserve.

I appreciate your support and time. If any of you can help us out by opening up your shelters to our dogs, please contact me. You can reach me at 867-445-3411 or at this email address nwtspcaprez@hotmail.com.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Northern Spirits K9!

Claudie & I were out on the Reserve on Thanksgiving October 12th. We fed the dogs we normally take care of and picked up a couple of stray and unwanted dogs while we were out there. One little male no more than eight weeks old was given to us by the owner who did not want him any more. Claudie had taken the others a few weeks ago but left two behind because the owner said they were male and he wanted to keep them. Now his comment to us was that they were making to much of a mess and he didn't want them any more. There were supposed to be two puppies but we could only find one. Maybe next weekend we'll find the other before it gets to cold out and the little guy freezes. The other little one we removed was a stray that has been running around all summer. This one was a little female almost a year old and there was no way I was going to leave her out on the Reserve to fend for herself with winter just around the corner. She had been hanging around with a pack of about six other dogs and always looking pretty beat up. On our last two visits we found her running by herself and almost starved. I just didn't have the heart to leave her where she was. Both animals were dropped off at the Edmonton Humane Society as we have no foster homes open to us at this time. S.C.A.R.S. is full to capacity and attempting to make arrangements for another bunch of dogs coming in from up north. Both dogs have been posted to the Humane Societies website so if you're looking for a dog be sure to have a look. I've always found that any animal off of the Reserve has a great personality. All they require is a little T.L.C. and you'll have a friend for life.

Once again if you live in or around the Edmonton area and can foster a dog until a good home can be found, give us a call or send us an email.

Northern Spirits K9!

Claudie went out to the Reserve yesterday to feed the dogs and took a vet tech along with her who volunteered her time to give the dogs some inoculations. They inoculated 14 dogs and while out there one of the residence asked Claudie to remove three puppies that were hanging around her house. As S.C.A.R.S. is full and we have no foster homes as of yet the puppies were taken to the Humane Society for adoption. I'm sure they will find homes in a hurry as puppies normally do.
Once again if you live in or around the city of Edmonton and have room for a foster dog until a home can be found send me an email. We'll meet up with you and see what can be arranged.

Quill Free!

As promised here's the latest update on our latest rescue. To see our new found friend (we still haven't given him a name) without quills in his face simply click on the Title of the Blog.

Claudie recieved a call from S.C.A.R.S. on Tuesday and thought we had a foster home lined up. After picking up the little guy from the vet clinic Claudie and I drove across the city to meet with the lady who was going to take him. Long story short it didn't work out and we ended up bringing the little guy back home with us. Because he is such a 'woos' I carried him in and out of the house for the first few times. Night one was OK as he was still pretty beat up from the quills and stress caused with being in a new environment. Although we gave him a spot in a pen in the spare bathroom he decided to jump out of this and slept on a quilt he found on the floor. I spent most of the day outside with him in the yard and the two of us formed a bond. He will now walk on a leash and comes when called. Every once and awhile he gets silly and fights like a fish on a hook to attempt to get off the leash. You must remember this is the first time in his life he's had any restraint on him. Last night was a hoot to put it mildly. My little friend didn't want to stay in the pen we gave him. This is what the pen looks like normally, minus Marly Click Here To See Normal Crate I finally put a top on it so that it made a very large cage. He can stand up in it if he wants and it must be six feet long by three feet wide. This is the Modified Crate - Click Here To See. All he did was claw at it trying to get out until about 3:00 AM. I stayed by the cage in a sleeping bag hoping this would settle him down. Finally at about 3:30 I went off to bed as he settled down and went to sleep. This morning I got up and went into the room to see if he had eaten the cage or dug a hole in the floor to find his royal highness sleeping like a baby. I had to coax him out of the cage (go figure) and took him out for his morning pee. We walked around the yard for awhile and I wasn't sure what to do with him. Claudie was still home and suggested I just let him into the kitchen. I was not sure if I wanted this (our little friend isn't house trained) but did let him in. He decided that being by the back door was a good spot to lay down so I simply put a child gate (click here) across the entrance for him. He has food and water and I have a guard dog at the back door. Just kidding.

S.C.A.R.S. is still looking for a foster for us and of course as you read this if you think you could use a new friend give us a call or send me an email.

The Porcupine Strikes Again!

On August 9th Claudie and I were out at the Reserve feeding the dogs when we found one of the dogs full of quills. If you've been following the blogs you will see where a pack was taken in for quills on the 12th of July. You will find it hard to believe me when I tell you that one of the same dogs (a little male) was just covered in quills again. If you click on the Title of the blog he is the last picture posted. If you recall, last time I found him just when I was getting ready to leave after returning the other dogs home. I made a special trip into the clinic with him and returned him right back home that time. If he looked bad in the previous picture posted he was worse this time. We were told that he had been left like this for the past five days.

The owner told us to take the dog because she didn't want it to die in her yard. We told her that if we took him this time he would not be coming back and she agreed to surrender the dog to us.

Once again I had to use the capture pole to get him into a cage but he went in without much fight this time and off to the vets we went. Claudie had already called Dr. Lee and he came in from home to remove quills for us. I do not know how many vets would come in on a Sunday to help out a client in need? Thanks God for Dr. Lee!

Update 1:

Claudie just returned from the clinic, our little friend is sitting looking all beat up and dejected. He is a bit of a scardy cat to start with and now our challenge is to get a collar on him to get him outside for a pee. Claudie and I will go over a little bit later once the clinic settles down and spend some time with the little guy to see if we can't get him some fresh air etc. I'll keep you updated as we go.

Update 2:

Claudie and I went over to the Clinic last night just before they shut down for the night and stayed with our new found friend for awhile. I put a collar on him (Claudie went shopping for him) and he came out of the cage on his own after a few pats and encouragement. Fact: Res dogs are not used to being inside so walking on a tile floor causes a great deal of concern for them. I slid his butt up to the back door (no way he was walking on that stuff) and once the door was open and he saw good ole mother nature he got up and walked outside on his own. He made it as far as the grass which is only across a small back lane and decided he wasn't going any further. He proceeded to sit his butt down. Claudie had the leash and after awhile manged to coax him up and they went for a small walk. He finally started to pee and I cannot remember the last time I saw a dog pee so long. I swear he must have stood there for a good two to three minutes. I could actually see the relief on his face. To return him back inside I simply picked him up and carried him back to his cage inside the Clinic. I didn't feel right pushing him back inside. As much as he seems leery of males he doesn't seem to mind me picking him up and carrying him.

I must say he is looking a lot better than the last time I saw him. His left eye was still filled with goop (it cleaned up with a wipe) and we found another quill in his forehead that we removed. He is eating solid food at this time and drinking water. With a lot of TLC he should do just fine. We have been in touch with S.C.A.R.S. and they are attempting to find a foster home for him right now. If they cannot then I guess he comes home with Claudie and I until we can get him fattened up a little and find him a good home. If you live in or around the city of Edmonton give us a call and maybe this little guy is just what you've been looking for. We are also looking for Foster homes in and around the city so if you have some time to spend with these little creatures until a permanent home can be found give us a call. I'm sure we can work something out.

I'll keep you updated as we go.

In case you're wondering, all the monies spent so far on removing quills, an amputation for Jake (see his story @ Jake and shots for the dogs has been coming out of our own funds. There have not received any cash donations to our organization since we started up.
If you can find it in your heart please help us out. Any donations received will go towards taking care of the dogs. Once you make a donation we will keep you informed as to where your monies are being spent.

One More Rescued!

On Tuesday last week when Claudie and I went out to check on the dogs that were returned after getting their quills removed we were checking with the residents to see if there were any stray animals we could remove from the Reserve. We were approached by an older man who took us to a house where a little female was lying outside with an injured leg. After talking with the owners of the dog we were asked to remove her. They believed she had a broken leg and they told us that if we didn't take her they would simply take her out and shot her.
Claudie phoned SCARS and they had a foster who would take the dog in and have her checked at the Vet clinic the next day. It appears the leg was not broken but had a puncture wound received in a fight. She has a really good personality and will have no problem finding a good home.

More Rescues!

Claudie and I were out at the Reserve on the weekend and one of the packs we take care of managed to find a Porcupine. Three dogs were just totally covered with quills and unable to eat or drink and a forth, a little female (not as bad) had a few quills in her mouth. I've posted pictures for you. To see the pictures just click on the title.
We managed to get two of the four dogs into the Jeep with us. Claudie held the little female on her lap and I put another in the back. We phoned our vet and as luck would have it he was in the clinic on Sunday looking after a couple of animals he had done surgery on the day before. He waited in the clinic for us until we got there. I helped the Vet while Claudie and my son Eric went back for the other two. One little male (the worst)-(he's the last image in the series)could not be found when they went back but they did manage to pick up another dog and bring it back to the clinic with them.
On Monday morning Claudie and I went back to the Vet clinic and loaded the three dogs back into the Jeep and after dropping Claudie at work I headed back out to the Reserve to take the dogs home. I had with me this time a capture pole and a dog kennel in case I found the last dog.
As luck would have it, just as I was leaving after dropping off the three dogs and making sure they had food and water I found the forth dog. He was just beside a van almost where I stopped to let the three musketeers off earlier. This little guy is timid and although he appears to like females he is leery of men. He wouldn't come to me and stayed just far enough ahead of me that I couldn't get the noose from the capture pole over his head. He took me on a tour of the Reserve for about 20 minutes until finally hiding in a dog house at the back of one of the houses almost where I found him initially. I managed to get the capture noose over his head and literally had to drag the poor little guy back to the Jeep where I had left the cage sitting on the ground. I loaded him up and headed back into the city with him and to the Vet clinic. Because these poor animals are infested with flees I did not feel right asking the Vet to take the dog inside to remove the quills as the clinic had just done a couple of surgeries that morning and were housing other animals inside. Two Vets and a couple of the Vet Techs came outside and after sedating the dog in the cage we removed him and while leaving him on the tray from the cage removed the quills from him at the back on the clinic on the ground. If you look at the picture you can image the amount of quills this poor little guy had in him.
After giving him a shot to revive him from the sedative I left to drive him home. The drive back is almost an hour and I was hoping that this would give him enough time to come back to his senses. As much as I would have liked to keep him quiet for at least 24 hours Claudie and I have no place to keep another animal.
I arrived back on the Reserve and literally carried him to the back of the house where he and the other dogs seem to hang out. He was so swollen and beat up that I really felt bad leaving him. I may just go out this evening to check on the whole group to make sure they have food and water.

Update - July 19: This morning, Claudie and I went out to the Reserve. All the dogs that had quills removed greeted us when we arrived. They are all looking pretty good and were all eating food again.

Once again if you can find it in your heart please make a donation. Any donations received will go towards taking care of the dogs on the Reserve. Northern Spirits K9 Has Gone To The Birds!

You are not going to believe this but I do have pictures. Click on the title of this Blog to see the images.
On the 27th of June while out walking around the yard I found a tiny little Robin. I believe that high winds the day before may have caused the little guy affectionately known as Homer to be dislodged from the tree he was in. When I found him he could not fly and had a hard time moving through the grass. My concern was that Homer was not going to survive for very long. We have cats and other larger birds in and out of our yard on a daily basis. Claudie captured Homer and placed him in a plastic pot that we had from planting a tree and placed a book on top to prevent him from getting out while we wondered what we were supposed to do with a baby Robin. We left him for a little while and when Claudie went to check on him he opened his mouth and startled squawking at her. OK, so Homer was obviously hungry. What do you feed a baby Robin. Worms? Bugs? Berries? So I grab a shovel and have an idea where to find a worm. I had just recently dug up a spot to put roses in. I dig and find a couple of worms and after fumbling around manage to get them into Homer's mouth and down his throat. Now we're good for a couple of minutes but I cannot find any more worms and there is no place that we can find in the city of Edmonton that has worms for sale. Claudie logs onto the Internet and finds a site that says baby Robins can eat dog food, the kind in a can. Just happens that NSK9 has lots of dog food so we go about finding out if Homer will eat dog food. Homer loves dog food. We fed him dog food for a couple of days. Claudie had to go to the vet clinic to order special food for our dogs and while speaking with our Vet mentioned Homer. The Vet told us to feed Homer cat food, saying there was more protein in it then the dog food we were using. Claudie buys a few cans of cat food and the Vet is right. Homer loves cat food more than he loves dog food.
Homer eats every hour or so during the day and sleeps during the night. He appears to be good for about 8 hours without attention. He has his own little box (it's got a stick in it for him to climb on and a few pieces of paper towel in the bottom to catch all the waste. Homer appears to poop as much out as we put in. We keep him in our spare bathroom with a baseboard heater on to keep the room at about 70-80 degrees. Claudie feeds Homer with a straw. She uses the bent over piece and scoops up the food on the end of it. I simply use my finger.
The Vet tells us that Homer should be big enough in about 8 days to go out on his own so we'll keep feeding him and see what happens in about a week from now.
I'll keep you posted with the outcome.

UPDATE HOMER - July 16

Claudie and I have made three attempts to let Homer go now. He will only fly for a few feet and then simply hops around the yard. He is not much into flying yet. I'm thinking that we may have to contact a bird rescue centre and hope they have some time to teach a little Robin the ways of life. I'll keep you informed.

UPDATE HOMER - July 20

Claudie and I took Homer out into the country and released him. Found him a nice bushed area with lots of bugs and about 78 acres of farm land for him to fly around in. I'm gonna miss that little guy!

A Few More Rescued!

Claudie and I went out yesterday and managed to pick up three of ten puppies that I spoke about on June 9th. Not sure what happened to the rest but we are hoping that they show up in the next few days. If this is the case we will remove them next weekend June 28. One of the little girls that was taking care of the puppies told us that someone picked up five of the puppies and made a statement about putting them in the lake. Hope this is not the case but time will tell I guess.

All the puppies we rescued were dropped off at a foster home with folks associated with (S.C.A.R.S.) Second Chance Animal Rescue. These puppies are so cute they will not have any problem finding a new life. Claudie took pictures of them all and will be posting them on our site in the next few days.

*One of our goals this year is to Spay/Neuter as many of the K9s on the reserve that we can but we need your help to do this. Your donations would be greatly appreciated.

To Our Home Page

Well it's almost April and Spring if you can call it that is attempting to come to Alberta Canada. We still have snow on the ground. It is normally gone by now but this year we are getting a special treat. (Snow all year round.) If you noticed the Title of this Blog (Northern Spirit K9 Rescue Service) this is an endeavor Claudie and I are taking on. Our domain name is already posted on the net and it will not be long before you be able to watch our progress. If you click on the Title it will take you to our home page. Bookmark it and watch as we grow. We've already run the Nuans and it looks like this name is available for us to use. We will be registered as a non-profit organization in the near future and will continue to do what we have been doing for the past year. Taking care of dogs that run loose without food or water or a place to call home. Once we have everything finalized I'll post another Blog and keep you all informed.
